In ‘Woman being filmed’ Newton combines two of his favourite themes: the voyeuristic gaze and empowered, nonchalant sexuality of the lady. This candid portrait of a group of onlookers fills the room with an erotic tension that plays on the psychosexual fantasies Newton so readily drew from. Provocatively unashamed to exposure gender hierarchies in a coolly detached manner, Newton’s work spoke to a politically incorrect realism that exposed fantasies modelled around the femme fatale.
