Newton loved the romanticism of the water and spent much of his career in Monte Carlo. ‘Cruising from behind’ shows Newton at his overtly sexual best. Playing on the hierarchies between Captain and sailor, Newton creates sexually unabashed imagery heighted by the fantasy of the sea.
